US Golden Dome project faces questions over cost, technology and strategic impact
The United States is moving ahead with its ambitious Golden Dome missile-defense project, presenting the system as a necessary response to an increasingly complex range of threats. However, the scale of the investment and the technical challenges involved have raised questions over whether the program can deliver the level of protection envisioned by Washington.
According to the Financial Times, US authorities expect the project to require around $185 billion in spending through 2035. General Michael Guetlein, the US Space Force officer overseeing the initiative, has described the investment as both a military necessity and a form of economic insurance against potential attacks by major powers and other adversaries.
The program is intended to address a broad spectrum of threats, including hypersonic weapons, low-flying cruise missiles, advanced submarines and increasingly sophisticated autonomous drone swarms. US officials have also emphasized the growing importance of space-based capabilities, arguing that weapons operating in low Earth orbit could potentially threaten targets across the globe.
Despite the strategic ambition, important details about the architecture, capabilities and final cost of Golden Dome remain classified or unresolved. The Congressional Budget Office has reportedly reached a much higher estimate under its own assumptions, suggesting that the total cost could eventually exceed $1 trillion — several times the Pentagon's current projection.
The disparity illustrates one of the central challenges facing the initiative: building a comprehensive missile-defense network that integrates land-, sea- and space-based sensors and interceptors would require not only enormous financial resources but also significant technological coordination. Detecting and intercepting hypersonic or maneuverable weapons remains particularly difficult because of their speed, unpredictable trajectories and ability to alter course.
The US military has said it intends to conduct initial tests of the system during 2026, with flight testing expected to begin in 2027. The outcome of those tests will be closely watched as Washington seeks to determine whether the proposed architecture can provide reliable protection against sophisticated attacks.
The project has also triggered concerns in Moscow. Russian officials have repeatedly argued that Golden Dome could undermine strategic stability by encouraging a new cycle of competition in missile and space technologies. Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev has described the initiative as highly provocative, while Defense Minister Andrei Belousov has warned that the system could potentially be designed not only to intercept missiles but also to target Russian and Chinese capabilities before they are launched.
The debate surrounding Golden Dome therefore extends beyond its price tag. Supporters view the project as an essential modernization of US defenses in an era of rapidly evolving weapons technology. Critics, meanwhile, question whether even a very expensive multilayered system could guarantee protection against large-scale or highly sophisticated attacks, particularly if rival powers respond by developing new offensive capabilities.
For Washington, the challenge will be to balance technological ambition with affordability and strategic stability. As testing progresses, the effectiveness of Golden Dome — and whether its eventual cost matches its promised security benefits — is likely to remain at the center of the debate over the future of US missile defense.
