Florida Senate passes historic resolution praising Morocco–US partnership
The Florida Senate has adopted a historic resolution recognizing the longstanding ties between Morocco and the United States and highlighting the Kingdom’s role as a strategic Atlantic partner.
Presented by Senator Ana Maria Rodriguez, the resolution underscores Morocco’s unique place in American diplomatic history, noting that it was the first country to recognize U.S. independence in 1777, formalized by the 1786 Treaty of Peace and Friendship—one of the oldest uninterrupted treaties in U.S. history.
The text also references the December 2020 U.S. presidential recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, describing it as a milestone that strengthened the strategic alliance between the two nations and opened new avenues for cooperation in peace, security, and regional development.
The resolution highlights the Royal Initiative for Atlantic Cooperation, which seeks to deepen political, economic, and cultural ties between Africa and the Americas. It also emphasizes Morocco’s role as an active member of the African Continental Free Trade Area, providing a strategic gateway for trade and investment with the United States.
The Senate document celebrates key milestones in Morocco–Florida relations, including the opening of the Moroccan Consulate General in Miami in June 2025, and cites several cooperation agreements:
- Sister city agreement between Hollywood (Florida) and Laâyoune (Morocco) in November 2023
- Agreement between the Casablanca-Settat region and Miami-Dade County in October 2025
- Protocols among Casablanca-Settat chambers of commerce, the American Chamber of Florida, and CAMACOL
- Twin port agreement between Port of Miami-Dade and Port of Casablanca in 2002
Finally, the resolution recognizes Morocco as a strategic bridge connecting Africa, Europe, and the Americas and calls for enhanced cooperation in trade, maritime industries, tourism, green energy, and education. It also highlights the contribution of the Moroccan diaspora and cultural exchanges promoted by the Miami consulate in fostering mutual understanding between Moroccan and Floridian communities.
