US Senate confirms Duke Buchan III as new American ambassador to Morocco

The United States Senate has officially confirmed Duke Buchan III as the new American ambassador to Morocco, marking his return to diplomatic service in a region he knows well.

Buchan’s appointment, announced by former President Donald Trump earlier this year, was endorsed by the Senate on Tuesday. Trump praised Buchan’s leadership and familiarity with Morocco, stating that his mission would reinforce “peace, freedom, and prosperity for both our countries.”

Strengthening diplomatic and security cooperation

In his confirmation hearing, Buchan underscored his intent to deepen the already robust ties between the US and Morocco. He described Morocco as a vital strategic ally and praised its growing role in regional stability and economic development.

“My highest priority will be the safety and security of American citizens in Morocco,” he said, highlighting the increasing number of Americans who visit to explore the country’s diverse and “beautiful landscape.”

He also pointed to Morocco’s importance in joint defense efforts, referencing the annual African Lion military exercises, the largest of their kind in Africa, as a symbol of the two nations’ enduring military partnership.

Support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Sahara

During his hearing, Buchan reiterated Washington’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces, affirming the US stance that the Moroccan Autonomy Plan remains “the only realistic and lasting solution” for the Sahara conflict.

This position continues a policy line that has defined US-Morocco relations since 2020, when Washington first recognized Moroccan sovereignty over the territory.

A seasoned diplomat with global experience

Before his appointment to Rabat, Buchan served as US ambassador to Spain and Andorra from 2017 to 2021. He also held senior roles within the Republican National Committee as National Finance Chairman and leads Hunter Global Investors, an international investment firm active across more than 50 countries, including Morocco.

According to the US State Department, Buchan’s combination of business acumen and diplomatic experience “makes him well qualified to serve as the next US ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco.”

His long-standing ties to the country, built over four decades of travel, business, and engagement, are expected to guide his approach to advancing bilateral cooperation in trade, security, and education.
