Hakim Ziyech joins Botafogo for a new chapter in Brazil
Morocco international Hakim Ziyech is set to begin a new chapter in his career after arriving in Rio de Janeiro to complete his move to Brazilian club Botafogo.
The 33-year-old attacking midfielder was welcomed by Botafogo supporters at Galeão International Airport as he prepares to experience Brazilian football for the first time. After playing in Europe, the Middle East and Morocco, Ziyech is now taking on a very different challenge in one of the world’s most passionate footballing environments.
The move also represents a personal adventure for the Moroccan, who has expressed his long-standing interest in discovering Rio de Janeiro. Beyond the sporting challenge, Ziyech is expected to experience a football culture deeply rooted in Brazilian society, where the game plays a major role in everyday life.
Before the transfer becomes official, Ziyech must complete his medical examination and finalize the remaining formalities. The expected agreement would keep him at Botafogo until December 2028, reflecting the club’s confidence in his experience and technical qualities.
Ziyech built his reputation at Ajax, where his performances earned him a move to Chelsea. During his time in England, he competed in the Premier League and UEFA Champions League before continuing his career with Galatasaray and Qatari side Al-Duhail.
He later returned to Morocco to join Wydad Casablanca. During his most recent season with the Casablanca club, Ziyech made 16 appearances, scoring nine goals and providing two assists.
His arrival at Botafogo marks another significant change in a career that has taken him across several footballing cultures. The Brazilian experience will give the Moroccan international an opportunity to adapt to a new style of play while bringing his international experience and creativity to his new team.
At 33, Ziyech is embarking on an unusual but potentially significant stage of his career. His move to Brazil offers both a sporting challenge and an opportunity to immerse himself in a country where football is not simply a game, but a central part of popular culture.
