United states warn Iraq over future relations with Iran

The United States has issued a clear warning to Iraq regarding any potential political shift that could strengthen Iran’s influence in Baghdad, amid growing speculation about the possible return of former prime minister Nouri al-Maliki to power.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone conversation with current Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, during which he emphasized Washington’s expectations for Iraq to remain a stabilizing force in the Middle East. According to US officials, Rubio stressed the importance of preserving Iraq’s sovereignty and avoiding involvement in regional conflicts.

American officials have repeatedly expressed concern that a government perceived as being closely aligned with Tehran could undermine Iraq’s national interests and complicate its strategic partnership with the United States. Washington believes that excessive Iranian influence could weaken Iraq’s economic prospects and security balance.

Nouri al-Maliki, a prominent figure in Iraqi politics, has recently received backing from major Shiite political alliances with historical ties to Iran. His potential return comes at a time when Iran is facing domestic unrest and increased pressure at the regional and international levels.

The United States continues to hold significant leverage over Iraq, particularly through mechanisms linked to oil revenue management established after 2003. While affirming Iraq’s right to choose its own leadership, Washington has signaled that it will shape its future cooperation based on the political direction taken by Baghdad.

Prime Minister al-Sudani, in office since 2022, has so far maintained constructive relations with the United States, notably by working to limit the influence of armed groups operating outside state authority.
