UK raises concern over Israel’s planned expansion in Lebanon
The United Kingdom has expressed growing concern over Israel’s stated intention to expand its ground operations in Lebanon, warning of the risk of further escalation in an already volatile region.
British Foreign Office Minister Hamish Falconer said the situation was “deeply concerning,” noting that more than one million people have already been displaced by the ongoing conflict. He urged restraint and called on Israel to avoid actions that could worsen the crisis or lead to the occupation of Lebanese territory.
The escalation follows weeks of intensifying hostilities. Israeli forces have carried out airstrikes and ground operations in southern Lebanon after cross-border attacks attributed to Hezbollah earlier in March. The situation has contributed to broader regional instability, with tensions spreading across multiple fronts.
The conflict is unfolding against the backdrop of a wider confrontation involving Iran, which has exchanged missile and drone strikes with Israel and targeted locations linked to U.S. interests in countries such as Jordan and Iraq. These developments have disrupted regional security and affected global markets, particularly in energy and aviation.
Beyond military concerns, the United Kingdom also raised issues related to religious freedoms. Hamish Falconer stressed that access to places of worship must be protected, criticizing restrictions affecting Christian and Muslim religious practices in Jerusalem.
Particular attention has been drawn to limitations surrounding the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the continued closure of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, one of Islam’s holiest sites. Worshippers have been forced to gather in smaller mosques across the city amid ongoing restrictions.
Israeli authorities have justified these measures on security grounds, extending a state of emergency while the conflict continues. However, the restrictions have drawn criticism from several countries and religious communities, who view them as disproportionate.
As tensions persist, international calls for de-escalation and respect for humanitarian and religious rights are intensifying. The situation remains highly fluid, with fears that any further military expansion could deepen the conflict and its global repercussions.
