UK Prime Minister's Stance: No Total Arms Ban for Israel

In a recent address to the House of Commons, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has unequivocally stated that he would never support a complete ban on arms sales to Israel. This stance was articulated amidst questions raised in Parliament, where Starmer emphasized Israel's right to self-defense.

"Banning the sale of defensive weapons to Israel is a position I cannot condone, especially in the aftermath of the October 7th attacks and the ongoing threats posed by Iran," Sir Keir asserted. He further explained, "It is inconsistent to support Israel's right to defend itself while simultaneously denying them the means to do so. This will never be my stance."

While the UK government has temporarily suspended 30 arms export licenses to Israel due to concerns over potential breaches of international law, 32 other licenses remain active. This decision has drawn criticism, with Zarah Sultana MP, currently suspended from the Labour Party, urging Starmer to take a stronger stance and impose a ban on "all arms sales" to Israel, including components for F-35 fighter jets.

Internationally, French President Emmanuel Macron has called for a halt to arms exports to Israel following its invasion of Lebanon. Macron emphasized the need for a political solution, stating, "The priority is to return to a political solution and stop delivering weapons to fight in Gaza."

Sir Keir echoed these sentiments, calling for restraint and a political resolution on the anniversary of the October 7th attack by Hamas on southern Israel. "The region cannot endure another year of this crisis. All parties must step back from the brink and find the courage to exercise restraint," he urged.
