UK, Canada, and Australia recognize Palestine, denounce Israel’s actions in Gaza
The United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia have formally recognized the State of Palestine in a landmark coordinated effort to revive the stalled two-state solution. This significant diplomatic move directly challenges Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza, which has resulted in tens of thousands of Palestinian casualties.
A united stand for Palestinian statehood
The official announcements, delivered today, mark a historic shift as three major Western countries publicly align against Israel’s actions while reaffirming their commitment to Palestinian self-determination.
United Kingdom
For the first time, the UK has officially recognized Palestine’s statehood. This decision comes as a direct response to Israel’s continued military operations and its defiance of international law. The UK’s move reflects growing frustration with Israel’s refusal to engage in meaningful peace talks and its systematic denial of Palestinian rights over decades.
Canada
Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, issued a strong condemnation of Israel’s actions. He highlighted the illegal settlement expansions in the West Bank and the devastating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, describing Israel’s policies as “collective punishment.” Carney stated that recognizing Palestine is consistent with both Canada’s foreign policy and the UN Charter’s principles of self-determination.
He emphasized that Israel’s government has openly rejected a two-state solution, leaving the international community no choice but to act decisively.
Australia
Australia also confirmed its formal recognition of Palestine, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong underscoring the move as a reflection of Australia’s long-standing commitment to a two-state solution. Albanese, currently in New York for the upcoming UN General Assembly session, emphasized that Palestinian aspirations for statehood are both legitimate and overdue.
International momentum builds
The joint decision by the UK, Canada, and Australia signals a growing impatience with Israel’s defiance of international law. It also reflects mounting pressure on the global stage to hold Israel accountable for its actions in Gaza, where relentless bombings and blockades have caused catastrophic humanitarian conditions.
Over 65,283 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since October 2023, with 166,575 injured. Many more remain unaccounted for, feared buried under rubble following Israeli strikes. Gaza’s suffering has been exacerbated by starvation and displacement, with over one million people forced from their homes.
A symbolic yet significant step
For Palestinians, these recognitions represent more than symbolic gestures. They strengthen Palestine’s international legitimacy and place Israel under unprecedented diplomatic pressure. The coordinated actions of these three Western powers could inspire other nations to follow suit, creating a broader push for accountability and justice.
While challenges remain, today’s announcements could mark the beginning of a global shift toward addressing decades of dispossession, siege, and violence endured by Palestinians.
