U.S. Citizen Arrested in Germany on Suspicion of Espionage for China

A U.S. citizen has been arrested in Frankfurt, Germany, on suspicion of attempting to provide sensitive military intelligence to China, German authorities confirmed on Thursday.

The individual, identified only as Martin D. in compliance with German privacy laws, had been employed by the U.S. armed forces in Germany until recently. According to a statement from the federal prosecutors' office, Martin D. allegedly reached out to Chinese government representatives earlier this year, offering to share classified U.S. military information, which was intended for transfer to Chinese intelligence services.

Prosecutors revealed that Martin D. had accessed the sensitive information while working with the U.S. military. Investigators have since conducted a search of his residence.

Later on Thursday, Martin D. was scheduled to appear before a judge at the Federal Court of Justice, where an arrest warrant would be issued, and a decision regarding pre-trial detention would be made.

This arrest is part of a broader pattern of increasing concerns about espionage activities linked to China. In recent months, Germany has taken action against multiple individuals suspected of spying for Beijing.

Just over a month ago, a Chinese woman, Yaqi X., was detained in Leipzig on charges related to passing sensitive information regarding arms shipments. Yaqi X. had reportedly shared details from her position at a logistics company at Leipzig/Halle airport with a member of the Chinese intelligence service. The data she passed on included information about flights, cargo, and the movement of military equipment linked to a German arms manufacturer.

Additionally, Jian G., a second individual involved in this case, is also under investigation. Jian G. was arrested earlier this year while working as an aide to Maximilian Krah, a member of the European Parliament for the far-right Alternative for Germany party. Jian G. faces charges related to severe espionage on behalf of Beijing.
