Two arrested after arson attack on Russian consulate in Marseille

French authorities have detained two individuals following an arson attack on the Russian consulate in Marseille. Prosecutors confirmed on Tuesday that improvised explosive devices were thrown at the consulate on the third anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but no injuries were reported.

The incident, which occurred on Monday, involved three plastic bottles filled with explosives being thrown into the consulate’s garden, of which only two detonated. The Russian government described the attack as a "terrorist act," while France strongly condemned any breach of diplomatic security.

The individuals arrested, identified as adults, were reportedly recognized during a pro-Ukraine demonstration held that evening. Local residents did not report hearing any explosions. The investigation into the attack is ongoing.

In February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a large-scale invasion of Ukraine, marking the beginning of Europe’s largest conflict since World War II.
