Austria recorded 646 heat-related deaths during June and July, according to the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES), as intense heatwaves affected large parts of Europe this summer.
The figure represents a new record for the country, exceeding the previous high of 570 heat-related deaths recorded during the same two months in 2024. The data highlight the growing health consequences associated with increasingly frequent periods of extreme heat.
Austria was among the European countries affected by exceptionally high temperatures and prolonged dry conditions this summer. Scientists have increasingly linked the intensification of extreme weather events to human-driven climate change, with Europe warming faster than any other continent.
The impact of extreme heat extends beyond discomfort, particularly for people who are more vulnerable to high temperatures. Older adults and individuals with certain underlying conditions can face a higher risk during prolonged heat episodes, placing additional pressure on healthcare systems and emergency services.
The country also experienced record-breaking temperatures later in the summer. In early August, temperatures reached 41.2 degrees Celsius in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg in eastern Austria, surpassing the previous national record of 41 degrees Celsius, which had been recorded just one day earlier in Vienna.
The latest figures add to growing evidence that extreme heat is becoming an increasingly important public-health challenge across Europe. Researchers have warned that rising temperatures can contribute to higher mortality, particularly when heatwaves persist for several consecutive days.
The Austrian experience also illustrates the broader challenge facing European governments as climate-related risks increase.
