Icelanders reject plans to resume European Union membership talks

Icelanders have voted against reopening negotiations on joining the European Union, according to the final results of a national referendum held on Saturday.

Official results released after all ballots were counted showed that 52.8% of voters opposed restarting negotiations with Brussels, while 47.2% supported returning to the negotiating table.

The referendum asked Icelandic voters whether the government should resume discussions with the European Union over possible membership. However, the vote did not determine whether Iceland would actually join the bloc.

Had the “yes” camp prevailed, negotiations with the EU would have been reopened. Any eventual agreement would then have required approval from Icelandic voters in a separate referendum before membership could become a reality.

Iceland first applied for EU membership in 2009, following the severe financial crisis that affected the country. Membership negotiations subsequently progressed before being suspended in 2013.

The latest referendum therefore marks another significant moment in Iceland’s long-running debate over its relationship with the European Union. Supporters of membership have highlighted the potential economic and political benefits of closer integration, while opponents have traditionally emphasized national sovereignty and Iceland’s ability to manage its own key economic sectors.

Despite remaining outside the European Union, Iceland already maintains close economic and political links with the bloc. Through its membership in the European Economic Area, the country has broad access to the European single market.

Iceland is also part of the Schengen Area, allowing passport-free travel across much of Europe and further strengthening its ties with EU member states.

The referendum result means that, for the time being, Iceland will continue to maintain its existing relationship with the European Union rather than moving toward renewed accession negotiations.
