Putin declares commitment to military strength, calls soldiers in Ukraine "defenders of Russia's future"
Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated his unwavering commitment to strengthening Russia's military, emphasizing the role of soldiers in Ukraine as protectors of the nation's interests and future. Speaking on February 23 during Russia's Defender of the Fatherland Day, Putin described the military as a cornerstone of the country's sovereignty amid global shifts.
"Today, in the context of rapid changes worldwide, our strategy for strengthening and developing the armed forces remains unchanged," Putin stated. He pledged to enhance the combat readiness of Russia's military and navy, calling them essential to safeguarding the nation's present and future sovereignty.
Putin also announced plans to equip Russia’s armed forces with advanced weaponry and technology. Notably, in November 2024, Russian forces tested a previously unknown hypersonic missile, named "Orechnik," marking a significant milestone in the country’s military capabilities.
Dialogue with the United States amid heightened tensions
Putin’s remarks come against the backdrop of ongoing geopolitical developments, including a recent thaw in relations with the United States under the administration of Donald Trump. The two leaders held a 90-minute phone conversation on January 12, followed by initial Russian-American talks in Saudi Arabia. The Kremlin has expressed interest in resuming dialogue with Washington "on all parameters."
Ukraine conflict and NATO concerns
On the eve of the third anniversary of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, Putin praised Russian soldiers fighting in the conflict, describing them as heroes defending the nation’s core interests. "Today, at the risk of their lives and with great courage, they resolutely defend their homeland, national interests, and the future of Russia," he said.
Putin reiterated Russia’s demands for resolving the conflict, including Ukraine’s surrender, its withdrawal from NATO aspirations, and assurances that territories occupied by Russian forces will remain under Moscow's control.
The Kremlin has framed its actions as a defense against NATO’s perceived threat and has called for a broader restructuring of Europe’s security architecture. Among Russia’s demands is the withdrawal of NATO forces from Eastern Europe, reflecting its long-standing opposition to the alliance's expansion near its borders.
