Trudeau Highlights Somber Eid Al Adha Amid Gaza Humanitarian Crisis

In a poignant message to the Muslim community, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has acknowledged the unusual nature of this year's Eid Al Adha celebrations due to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. As the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) continue their assaults, the traditional festivities are overshadowed by a profound sense of grief and solidarity.

Trudeau's annual message to Muslims emphasized the severe impact of the conflict, stating, "The scale of human suffering in Gaza, including in Rafah, is catastrophic. We reaffirm the need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and long-lasting peace in the region."

Eid Al Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, is one of Islam's most sacred observances, commemorating the devotion of the Prophet Ibrahim, who was willing to sacrifice his son Ishmael. This year, as many countries, including Saudi Arabia, celebrate the occasion, the atmosphere is markedly different.

Extending his Eid greetings, Trudeau noted that Muslims across Canada would gather at their local mosques on Sunday to share meals with loved ones and provide food to the needy. He underscored that the values celebrated during Eid Al Adha sacrifice, charity, and community are also core Canadian values.

Reaffirming his government's commitment to combatting hatred, Trudeau said, "With Budget 2024, we’re also increasing funding for the Security Infrastructure Program, protecting communities at risk of hate-motivated crimes." This pledge to address Islamophobia and anti-Arab racism has been a consistent theme in his messages during Islamic celebrations.

Trudeau concluded by recognizing the significant contributions of Muslim communities to Canada's multicultural fabric. "Muslim communities have helped build the strong and diverse Canada we know and love, and we will always stand with them," he affirmed.

As the world grapples with the ongoing crisis in Gaza, Trudeau's message serves as a reminder of the shared values of compassion and resilience, binding Canadians together in support of those suffering and in pursuit of peace.
