Man barricaded in Châteauroux exchanges gunfire with police
In Châteauroux, central France, a 78-year-old man barricaded himself in an apartment on Tuesday, exchanging gunfire with police, authorities reported. The incident prompted a security perimeter to be established, with residents advised to avoid the area.
According to police sources, the man threw three grenades from his window, one of which detonated, but no injuries were reported. Police attempted to apprehend him earlier for property damage, which led to the standoff.
The Indre prefecture confirmed on social media that “a police operation is currently underway” and urged the public to stay clear of the vicinity. A RAID unit was deployed to the scene, while bomb disposal teams are assessing the situation. Prefect Thibault Lanxade stated that there were two unexplained detonations and that law enforcement officers returned fire, emphasizing that no one was harmed.
