Qatar’s prime minister arrives in Venezuela in mediation effort
Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed ben Abdelrahmane al-Thani arrived in Caracas on Tuesday and was officially received by Venezuela’s foreign minister Yván Gil, state television footage showed, marking the highest-level diplomatic engagement between Doha and Caracas since the United States removed Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from power in January.
Neither government has released details of the agenda for the visit, but its timing is widely viewed as significant given Qatar’s established role as an intermediary between Washington and Caracas. Doha has previously played a part in facilitating negotiations between the Venezuelan government and opposition factions and in brokering a high-profile prisoner exchange between the United States and Venezuela in December 2023, strengthening its credentials as a neutral mediator.
Qatar’s diplomatic outreach has emphasised dialogue, restraint and de-escalation in response to recent tensions in Venezuela. The Qatari Foreign Ministry reiterated its readiness to support mediation efforts and maintain open channels of communication with all parties involved, underscoring its commitment to peaceful dispute resolution under international law.
The visit also takes place against the backdrop of Venezuela’s transitional leadership under acting president Delcy Rodríguez, who assumed office in early January after the Supreme Tribunal of Justice ordered her to take on presidential duties following Maduro’s removal. This development has added urgency to diplomatic initiatives aimed at addressing the political and economic turmoil that has intensified in the country.
Qatar has expressed deep concern over the situation in Venezuela and has called for dialogue to resolve outstanding issues, framing its engagement as part of broader efforts to foster stability amid ongoing international attention to Caracas’s internal and external challenges.
