The cost and accessibility of organic food in Spain

Eating organic food is often seen as a healthier lifestyle choice that also minimizes environmental impact. However, how feasible is it to purchase organic produce in Spain?

Many consumers express a desire to choose organic options, as these products are typically free from harmful pesticides. In Spain, organic produce—known as orgánico—is readily available, particularly in specialized fruit and vegetable shops. However, major supermarket chains often have limited selections.

Is organic food actually affordable in Spain?

According to the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) in Spain, purchasing organic products can increase monthly grocery expenses by nearly 70%. Rising inflation has already led to higher prices for many food items, and opting for eco-labelled products could mean spending up to 68% more. For instance, if an individual spends €872 on a regular shopping trip, that cost could soar to €1,465 if all items were organic.

While consistently buying organic may not be feasible for everyone, certain products warrant consideration for organic alternatives to manage costs. The Environmental Working Group has identified a list known as the "Dirty Dozen," which includes fruits and vegetables that typically contain the most pesticides. These items include strawberries, spinach, kale, grapes, peaches, pears, nectarines, apples, peppers, cherries, blueberries, and green beans. Prioritizing these organic options could be a practical strategy for consumers.

Additionally, choosing free-range and organic eggs is advisable, given the more humane treatment of chickens and its positive environmental impact. Organic meat and dairy products also contribute health benefits, with studies indicating that organic meat contains approximately 50% more beneficial omega-3 fatty acids compared to conventionally produced meats.

Despite the barriers, consumers can navigate the organic market by making selective purchases based on their budget.

Availability of organic products in Spain

Unlike the UK, where large supermarket chains prominently feature organic produce, many Spanish supermarkets, such as Mercadona, offer limited organic options. However, international chains like Lidl and Aldi provide a selection of organic items alongside their private label brands. Carrefour has sections dedicated to organic products, including fruits and vegetables.

El Corte Inglés, a department store with locations in major Spanish cities, also stocks a variety of ecological products. Notable organic supermarkets include Veritas, which operates 85 stores across Spain, particularly in the Basque Country, Catalonia, and Madrid. This chain also offers products without gluten and vegan options, as well as alternatives that are not typically found in standard supermarkets.

Herbalario Navarro is another well-regarded store, with locations throughout the Valencia region and in several major cities. Additionally, many companies provide organic fruit and vegetable delivery services, often operating on a subscription basis for regular deliveries. Local markets and farmer's markets also frequently feature organic sections, making them a viable source of organic produce.

In Barcelona, notable options are NaturaSì, Linverd, La Botiga Ecològica, Organic Market Gràcia, and Gra de Gràcia. Valencia features Terra Verda, Biosofia, and Nutriterapia Valencia. In Alicante, consumers can find Happy Vegetal, Escaramujo, and A Granel Alicante. Seville offers Red Verde, Biotienda, La Despensa Ecológica, and La Cosecha Ecológica. Lastly, in Málaga, organic options include El Cambio, La Buenavida Ecotienda, Biomilanes, Maya Organic, and Bostar Bio.

In summary, while the costs associated with organic food in Spain can be significant, there are various strategies consumers can adopt to incorporate organic options into their diets without overwhelming their budgets.
