In a significant turn of events, sources close to the ongoing Gaza ceasefire negotiations have raised concerns about potential setbacks to the peace process. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has come under scrutiny for allegedly introducing new demands that contradict previously agreed-upon terms, threatening to derail the delicate talks.

The accusations surfaced as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken concluded his Middle East tour in Qatar, emphasizing the critical nature of reaching a ceasefire agreement. "Time is of the essence," Blinken stated before departing for Washington. He expressed reservations about any prolonged Israeli presence in Gaza and reiterated that the United States, in collaboration with Egypt and Qatar, would spare no effort to ensure Hamas adheres to the proposed transition plan.

Hamas, for its part, has signaled its willingness to abide by the initial truce plan put forward by President Joe Biden. Addressing the Tikva and Gvura forums, the Israeli Prime Minister declared that Israel would maintain its presence in the Philadelphi and Netzarim corridors, a stance that appears to contradict earlier agreements.

An unnamed source, quoted by Israeli public broadcaster KAN, suggested that these statements might be a calculated move to hinder negotiations. "Netanyahu's comments are at odds with what has been negotiated and are intended to disrupt the peace process," the source claimed.

The ceasefire plan announced by Biden on May 31 outlines a comprehensive approach, including a six-week truce, an Israeli withdrawal from densely populated areas of Gaza, and the release of hostages, followed by a complete Israeli withdrawal.

As diplomatic efforts continue, the situation on the ground remains dire. Israeli airstrikes have reportedly resulted in at least 17 fatalities in Gaza over the past 24 hours. The conflict has also spilled over into Lebanon, with Israeli strikes claiming four lives in the same period, prompting retaliatory rocket and drone attacks from Hezbollah.
