Tanzania: Samia suluhu Hassan to seek second term in upcoming general elections
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has officially entered the race for a second term in office, with general elections scheduled for October 29, 2025.
Representing the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), the country's ruling party, Hassan submitted her candidacy forms on Saturday to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). She was confirmed as the party’s candidate earlier this year, in January.
Speaking after filing her nomination, Hassan declared: “We will launch our campaign on August 28 and conclude on October 28. We now await the people’s verdict.” The incumbent also pledged to implement “transformational reforms” if re-elected.
Hassan, who initially served as vice president from 2015 to 2021, assumed the presidency following the unexpected death of President John Magufuli in March 2021. She became Tanzania’s first female head of state and has since promoted a leadership style focused on diplomacy, economic reform, and inclusivity.
This year’s general elections will determine the next president as well as the composition of the National Assembly, amid growing calls for political transparency and democratic consolidation in the East African nation.
