Strong 7.8-magnitude earthquake strikes off Russia’s Far east, tsunami warning issued
A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.8 struck off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula early Friday, prompting a tsunami warning for nearby coastal areas, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake occurred at 6:58 a.m. local time (18:58 GMT Thursday), about 128 kilometers east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at a depth of 10 kilometers. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said hazardous waves could affect the eastern coast of Kamchatka and neighboring regions.
Local media and social networks showed videos of shaking furniture, swinging lamps, and cars moving back and forth in the streets. Russia’s national geophysical service gave a slightly lower estimate of magnitude 7.4 and reported at least five aftershocks.
Kamchatka’s governor, Vladimir Solodov, urged residents to remain calm, noting that no major damage had been reported so far. “Once again, the resilience of Kamchatka’s people is being tested,” he wrote on Telegram.
The Kamchatka Peninsula lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” one of the world’s most seismically active zones. In July, an 8.8-magnitude quake in the same region triggered a tsunami that damaged parts of a coastal village.
