Spanish prime minister to visit Kyiv, reaffirming support for Ukraine
The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, announced on Thursday that he will travel to Kyiv on Monday to reinforce Spain's unwavering support for Ukraine and its president, Volodymyr Zelensky, following controversial remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who referred to Zelensky as a "dictator."
"On Monday, I will be in Kyiv to reaffirm Spain's support for Ukrainian democracy and President Zelensky. #SlavaUkraini (#GloryToUkraine)," Sánchez posted on the social media platform X.
The visit comes amid heightened tensions sparked by Trump’s recent statements. The former U.S. president described Zelensky as a "dictator without elections" and issued a stark warning, saying, "He’d better act quickly, or he won't have a country left to govern."
Trump’s comments appeared on his own social media platform, Truth Social, just hours after Zelensky responded to earlier remarks. Trump had suggested that Ukraine "should never have started" the war, prompting Zelensky to accuse him of residing in a "Russian disinformation bubble."
In addition, Trump has proposed negotiations to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, notably excluding Kyiv and European governments from the process. He criticized Europe for its perceived failure to achieve peace in Ukraine and claimed the United States was successfully advancing talks to resolve the conflict.
Sánchez’s visit underscores Spain’s alignment with Ukraine amid ongoing international debate over the war and its resolution.
