Somalia says order restored in Mogadishu after armed clashes
The Somali government announced that security forces have restored order in parts of the capital, Mogadishu, following armed confrontations between government troops and militias linked to opposition leaders.
According to official statements, security operations were carried out in two districts of the capital after violence erupted amid rising political tensions. Authorities stated that the situation has been brought under control and that residents have resumed their normal daily activities.
The clashes occurred ahead of planned demonstrations related to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's decision to remain in office after the expiration of his term. The protests ultimately did not take place, but tensions surrounding constitutional reforms and the electoral process have continued to fuel political disagreements.
Government officials reported that armed groups associated with opposition figures had been removed from the affected areas. However, local residents and opposition representatives suggested that a cessation of hostilities was achieved through mediation efforts involving community and clan elders rather than through complete disarmament.
Several opposition leaders have accused the government of undermining constitutional procedures, while authorities have countered that opposition-linked militias endangered public safety by operating in residential neighborhoods.
The developments have attracted international attention. Organizations including the United Nations, the African Union, and regional partners have urged all parties to resolve their differences through dialogue and peaceful political engagement.
Somalia continues to face significant security and political challenges as it seeks to strengthen state institutions and maintain stability. The country has experienced decades of political instability since the collapse of the government of Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991 and remains engaged in efforts to combat extremist violence while advancing democratic governance.
The latest events highlight the importance of political dialogue and consensus-building as Somalia navigates a sensitive period in its constitutional and electoral development.
