Russia’s Rosatom says drone strike hit Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant
Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom announced on Saturday that a Ukrainian drone struck the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, the largest nuclear facility in Europe, located in southeastern Ukraine.
According to Rosatom officials, the drone impacted the turbine hall of one of the plant’s power units, causing an explosion that damaged part of the building’s structure. However, the company stated that no critical equipment was affected and that the core operational systems remained intact.
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been under Russian control since 2022 and remains close to active frontlines in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The facility has repeatedly raised international concern due to its proximity to military operations and the potential risk of a nuclear incident.
Rosatom described the attack as deliberate and warned about the dangers of continued military activity near nuclear infrastructure. Ukrainian authorities had not issued an immediate comment regarding the incident at the time of reporting.
Experts have repeatedly warned that any damage to the plant could have serious consequences, not only for the region but also for broader environmental and public safety across Europe.
