Real Madrid president challenges Barcelona over referee corruption scandal

Florentino Pérez, president of Real Madrid, has reignited the controversy surrounding the Negreira case, accusing Barcelona of compromising the integrity of Spanish football. Speaking at the latest Real Madrid Assembly, Pérez adopted a far more critical tone than a year ago, directly addressing the payments made by Barcelona to José María Enríquez Negreira, the former vice-president of Spain’s referees' committee.

Pérez breaks silence on the Negreira case

During his address, Pérez denounced Barcelona’s payments to Negreira, which reportedly exceeded €8 million over 17 years. He emphasized the seriousness of the allegations, stating, “It is not normal that Barcelona has paid the vice-president of the referees more than eight million euros for at least 17 years, whatever the reason.”

Pérez highlighted the influence Negreira held during his tenure, overseeing referee promotions and relegations, coinciding with Barcelona’s most successful sporting era. He further pointed out statistical anomalies, such as Barcelona’s net balance of 61 fewer red cards compared to Real Madrid during the Negreira period, while their European records remained nearly identical. Pérez described this as a glaring inconsistency that undermines the credibility of Spanish football.

Questioning neutrality and accountability

The Real Madrid president criticized the continued presence of referees from Negreira’s era in Spanish football, suggesting their involvement could still affect impartiality. He also referenced a controversial incident before a recent Copa del Rey final, where a referee allegedly stated intentions to act against Real Madrid. Pérez questioned the lack of disciplinary action in such cases, reinforcing his concerns about lingering bias.

In a broader attack, Pérez called out La Liga president Javier Tebas, accusing the league of favoring Barcelona and Villarreal through financial incentives to play matches abroad. He condemned past efforts to stage a league match in Miami, which even Barcelona’s captain Frenkie de Jong opposed, calling the proposal “abnormal.”

Background on the Negreira case

The Negreira case remains one of the most significant scandals in Spanish football history. Investigations revealed that Barcelona made substantial payments to Negreira and his companies between 2001 and 2018. Prosecutors allege that these payments could have influenced refereeing decisions, although Barcelona insists they were for technical reports.

The controversy has deepened the divide between Barcelona and Real Madrid, with Pérez’s latest remarks signaling a shift toward confrontation. By framing the issue as a matter of integrity, Pérez positioned Real Madrid as a defender of fair play, vowing not to let the scandal fade into obscurity.

Pérez’s speech underscores Real Madrid’s determination to hold Barcelona accountable for the Negreira scandal. His sharp criticism signals a departure from previous calls for unity, marking a new chapter in the rivalry between Spain’s two most iconic football clubs. The fallout from the case continues to cast a shadow over Spanish football, raising questions about transparency and governance.
