Peruvians vote in a highly fragmented presidential race as runoff becomes likely
Peruvians are heading to the polls in a highly competitive general election to choose a new president and members of Congress, in a vote shaped by years of political instability and weakening public trust in institutions.
More than 30 presidential candidates are competing in the first round, reflecting a deeply fragmented political landscape. With no leading contender close to the majority threshold required for an outright win, analysts expect a second-round runoff in June.
The election comes after years of frequent leadership changes, corruption scandals, and institutional conflict. Since 2018, Peru has seen multiple presidents, contributing to widespread voter frustration and skepticism about whether any incoming government can complete a full term.
Polls suggest that no candidate is likely to secure the 50% plus one vote needed to avoid a runoff, extending uncertainty in the country at a time when crime and public insecurity remain major concerns.
Many voters expressed disillusionment with the political class, saying they feel none of the candidates represent a convincing solution to the country’s challenges. Economic pressure and rising insecurity have become central issues in the campaign.
Peru, one of the world’s leading copper producers, is also navigating growing geopolitical attention, with both China and the United States seeking to strengthen influence in the country’s strategic mining sector.
Experts note that public frustration is largely directed at Congress, which is widely seen as contributing to prolonged political deadlock and instability over the past decade.
As voting continues, attention is focused on whether any candidate can consolidate enough support to advance to the runoff and eventually bring stability to a country marked by repeated political disruption.
