Morocco joins US-led international partnership focused on artificial intelligence
Morocco has expanded its involvement in international artificial intelligence initiatives by joining a US-led partnership aimed at strengthening cooperation around the technologies and infrastructure needed to develop the global AI economy.
Morocco is among 19 countries that recently joined a joint statement supporting the AI Opportunity Partnership, bringing the total number of participating countries to 54. The expansion was announced by the US State Department on October 1 following high-level meetings held during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The initiative goes beyond the development of AI models and software applications. Its broader focus includes the physical infrastructure required to support the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence, such as energy supplies, critical minerals, semiconductors, computing capacity and data centres.
These components have become increasingly important as the global demand for AI services grows. Training and operating advanced AI systems require substantial computing resources and access to reliable energy, while semiconductor supply chains have become a strategic consideration for governments and technology companies.
The partnership also covers research and development, workforce training and skills development, technology investment and the expansion of digital infrastructure. Cooperation in these areas is intended to help participating countries strengthen their ability to develop and deploy AI technologies across different sectors.
Another element of the initiative is the promotion of regulatory approaches designed to support innovation and economic growth. The partnership also encourages investment in technology start-ups and developers while seeking to expand international cooperation in research, digital infrastructure and emerging technologies.
The private sector is expected to play a central role in the initiative. Cross-border investment, partnerships between companies and improved access to data centres and computing resources are among the areas that could support the development of new AI models and applications.
For Morocco, participation provides an opportunity to engage with a broader international network working on several foundations of the AI economy. The country's involvement comes as governments increasingly seek to attract technology investment, develop digital infrastructure and strengthen their position in emerging global technology value chains.
Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly linked to questions of energy security, access to strategic minerals and semiconductor supply. Countries seeking to expand their digital economies are therefore placing greater emphasis on infrastructure and industrial capabilities alongside software and research.
Human capital is another key component of the emerging AI landscape. Training engineers, researchers and digital specialists can help countries develop local expertise and improve their ability to adopt AI applications in areas ranging from industry and finance to public services and scientific research.
Morocco's participation consequently places the country within a growing international discussion on how to build the infrastructure, skills and investment frameworks required for the next phase of artificial intelligence development. As AI becomes increasingly important to innovation and economic competitiveness, international partnerships are likely to play a greater role in shaping access to the technologies that underpin the sector.
