Paris Saint-Germain weighs Parc des Princes expansion as stadium decision nears
The Ligue 1 champions are expected to settle the question within the coming weeks as discussions continue over the future of the club’s home. According to L’Équipe, the proposed expansion of the historic Paris venue remains the leading scenario among three possibilities under consideration.
The project would transform the existing stadium into a significantly larger facility, with the club targeting a capacity of around 70,000 spectators. The plans also envisage bringing Paris Saint-Germain’s offices back to the stadium while adding a museum and new retail spaces.
Three scenarios under consideration
Paris Saint-Germain has been examining several solutions during consultations with the stakeholders involved in the stadium’s future. Alongside the expansion of the Parc des Princes, the club is assessing the construction of a new stadium in Poissy or Massy, two locations in the Paris region.
The choice carries major sporting, financial and symbolic implications. The Parc des Princes has been closely associated with Paris Saint-Germain for decades, making any decision concerning its future particularly significant for the club and its supporters.
The expansion option, however, faces an important legal and heritage-related obstacle.
Architect’s daughter raises concerns over expansion
Sophie Taillibert, daughter of architect Roger Taillibert, has expressed reservations about altering the stadium designed by her father. She has argued that protecting the architectural integrity of the original work is a responsibility she cannot set aside.
Her position could prove decisive because Paris Saint-Germain must consult her and obtain prior approval before undertaking the proposed modifications, according to L’Équipe. No agreement has yet been reached, although discussions between the parties are reportedly continuing.
Sophie Taillibert has indicated that she does not intend to rush the process. While she believes negotiations are moving forward, the absence of a settlement could eventually lead to legal proceedings.
October meeting could prove crucial
The issue is expected to return to the agenda of the steering committee at its second meeting, scheduled for October 16. Representatives of the various stakeholders are due to take part in the discussions as efforts continue to find a compromise.
For Paris Saint-Germain, the meeting represents another step toward resolving a question that has become central to its long-term development strategy.
The technical studies commissioned around the expansion project point toward a 70,000-seat stadium with additional club facilities, commercial areas and a dedicated museum. Whether those ambitions can ultimately be reconciled with the architectural legacy of the Parc des Princes could determine whether Paris Saint-Germain remains in its historic home or embarks on a new chapter elsewhere in the Paris region.
