Paraguay explores live cattle exports to Morocco

Paraguay is actively studying the possibility of exporting live cattle to Morocco, as local producers seek to diversify their export markets. This initiative is part of a national strategy aimed at enhancing the presence of the South American country in new markets, according to the Paraguayan newspaperABC.

Morocco is identified as a key destination for the Paraguayan beef industry, attributed to its growing market and increasing demand for meat products. Ramiro Maluff, a representative of the Paraguayan live cattle export sector, revealed that the project is currently under review, with consultations ongoing between the Official Veterinary Service of Paraguay and its counterparts in Argentina and Morocco.

In terms of logistics, ranchers are considering using the port of Montevideo in Uruguay as the primary export point for cattle destined for Morocco. The first shipment could include around 15,000 head of cattle, marking a significant milestone in the diversification of Paraguayan export markets.

This export initiative also responds to fluctuations in domestic market prices. Ramiro Maluff, president of the Paraguay Cattle Producers Association, emphasized that exporting live cattle could facilitate a better distribution of income and support local producers' profitability. He also warned of a potential reduction in herd size due to falling prices, which could have repercussions for the entire meat and by-products industry.

To this end, the Official Veterinary Service of Paraguay has engaged in consultations with its counterparts in Argentina and Morocco to ensure the health compliance of animals destined for export. This effort strives to guarantee the quality of the livestock intended for export and secure market access in Morocco.

By diversifying its export destinations and considering the use of the port of Montevideo in Uruguay as the shipping point, Paraguay aims to strengthen its foothold in the Moroccan market and sustain its beef industry in the face of international price fluctuations and the challenges facing the meat sector.
