Palestinian Entrepreneur Launches Beverage Brand to Fund Gaza Hospital Reconstruction

In response to the widespread destruction of Gaza's healthcare infrastructure, Palestinian activist and entrepreneur Osama Qashoo has introduced Gaza Cola, a social enterprise initiative aimed at rebuilding the Al Karama hospital in northern Gaza through sales proceeds.

Qashoo, 43, developed this alternative beverage brand with a specific mission: to help restore Gaza's healthcare system, which the United Nations has warned faces imminent collapse. Speaking to The Guardian at Palestine House in London, Qashoo explained his choice of Al Karama Hospital, noting its manageable size makes it a feasible initial project.

While specific costs and timelines remain undefined, Qashoo maintains an optimistic outlook. "We are allowed to have an imagination... We have to dream; otherwise we can't live," he expressed.

The initiative builds upon Qashoo's extensive background in humanitarian work and entrepreneurship. As a founding member of the Free Gaza Movement, he orchestrated a humanitarian aid mission via flotilla to Gaza in 2010. His business acumen is evidenced by his successful ventures in London's hospitality sector, including the establishment of the popular Hiba restaurants. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he demonstrated his commitment to healthcare support by launching a crowdfunding campaign that provided free meals to NHS frontline workers.

Though not personally a consumer of carbonated beverages, Qashoo views Gaza Cola as more than just a commercial venture. "It's a statement to all these corporate companies who are investing in armed trade," he explained. His message to corporate investors is pointed: "Do you see what your money's doing? Because it is doing damage. It is destroying homes and our environment... They need to wake up, and they need to understand that their money, their greed, is causing our genocide."

The initiative represents a creative approach to humanitarian aid, combining social entrepreneurship with direct community support in a region facing severe infrastructure challenges.
