Palestinian Authority Closes Al Jazeera Platforms in Latest Press Restriction

The Palestinian Authority (PA) has recently ordered the shutdown of several Al Jazeera digital platforms for four months, according to a court document from the Magistrate Court of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank. This is the latest in a series of actions against the network by the PA.

In a letter dated Sunday, the Attorney General’s Office instructed the Palestinian Ministry of Communication to enforce the court’s ruling, which includes blocking access to websites such as aljazeera.net, aljazeera.net/live, aljazeera360.com, and global.ajplus.net. The order also mandates that licensed radio and satellite broadcasting companies comply with the decision, warning of legal consequences for non-compliance.

The PA justified this decision by claiming that the websites published content that could "threaten national security" and incite criminal activity.

This action follows the PA's closure of Al Jazeera’s office in the occupied West Bank just days earlier, suspending its operations. A ministerial committee from the PA, which included representatives from the ministries of culture, interior, and communications, argued that the network was disseminating "inciting material" and misleading reports, which allegedly fueled internal conflicts. Al Jazeera condemned the closure, stating that it was a deliberate attempt to prevent coverage of the escalating events in the occupied territories and a tactic aligned with Israeli actions against the network.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) also criticized the closure, calling for its immediate reversal and emphasizing the importance of Al Jazeera’s reporting from Gaza and the West Bank.

Human rights activists and analysts suggest that these actions by the PA are part of a larger campaign to suppress criticism of its security operations, particularly in the Jenin refugee camp, where a recent crackdown on Palestinian armed groups occurred. This crackdown, which began in early December, has involved heavy restrictions, including cutting off water and electricity to many residents. Critics argue that the PA's actions in Jenin and its broader assault on free speech raise serious concerns about the state of press freedom and human rights in the region.

The PA's tactics are similar to those employed by Israel, which has also targeted Al Jazeera's presence in the West Bank. In September, Israeli authorities raided Al Jazeera's office in Ramallah and closed it down.
