Emmanuel Macron to Inaugurate the Historic Bayeux Tapestry Exhibition in London
The French president will travel to the British Museum on Wednesday to inaugurate the exhibition dedicated to the famous medieval embroidery. This exceptional one-year loan, prepared since 2025, also illustrates the desire to strengthen cultural ties between France and the United Kingdom.
A Culturally Significant Event
Emmanuel Macron will officially kick off a highly anticipated heritage event in London on Wednesday: the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition at the British Museum.
The French head of state has personally supported this project, announced in the summer of 2025. The presentation of the work in the British capital represents an unprecedented operation for this major piece of French heritage, whose fragility had raised concerns among several specialists before its relocation.
Arriving in London on July 10, the tapestry will now take its place within the prestigious British museum for a duration of one year. The exhibition will open to the public on September 10, 2026, and will continue until July 11, 2027.
A Medieval Work at the Heart of European History
Created in the 11th century, the Bayeux Tapestry narrates, through a succession of embroidered scenes, the events that led to the conquest of England by William the Conqueror in 1066.
Much more than an artistic object, this work serves as an exceptional historical source on medieval Europe. Its representations of characters, ships, battles, and scenes of everyday life provide a rare visual testimony of a period that profoundly marked the history of both France and England.
Thus, its relocation to London carries a particular significance: the object that recounts the Norman conquest of England is being presented, for several months, in the country at the heart of this historical episode.
A Transfer That Raised Concerns
The loan of the tapestry was not decided without precautions. Its preservation is a major issue given its age and great vulnerability.
The transfer to London had raised concerns among specialists and defenders of French heritage. However, initial observations made after its arrival in the UK did not reveal any visible alterations related to the transport.
This step has allowed for a significant milestone before its installation in the spaces of the British Museum.
Macron Also Expected at Downing Street
The presidential visit will not be limited to the cultural event. Emmanuel Macron is also expected to be received at Downing Street during his trip to London.
According to an advisor from the Élysée, the French president is set to meet with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and may also be received by King Charles.
The sequence surrounding the Bayeux Tapestry thus fits into a trip that blends heritage, diplomacy, and Franco-British relations. Behind the exceptional loan of a work nearly a millennium old, Paris and London also aim to highlight a shared historical heritage, despite the sometimes complex relations between the two countries.
