Tragic Loss: Five Journalists Killed in Israeli Strike Near Gaza Hospital
In a devastating incident in central Gaza, five journalists were killed when an Israeli airstrike hit their broadcasting van near al-Awda Hospital in the Nuseirat refugee camp. The journalists, who were covering events in the area, were from the Al-Quds Today channel. The strike took place early Thursday morning, resulting in a van engulfed in flames. Footage circulating on social media shows a white van with the word “press” clearly visible in large red letters across the back.
The victims have been identified as Fadi Hassouna, Ibrahim al-Sheikh Ali, Mohammed al-Ladah, Faisal Abu al-Qumsan, and Ayman al-Jadi. Tragically, Ayman al-Jadi had been waiting outside the hospital for his wife, who was in labor with their first child. Civil defense teams later recovered the bodies and extinguished the fire at the scene.
In response to the attack, Israel’s military stated it had targeted a vehicle carrying members of Islamic Jihad, continuing its efforts against what it described as “terrorist organizations” in Gaza. The military emphasized that measures had been taken to minimize civilian casualties, including the use of precision weapons and intelligence.
This incident adds to the growing toll on journalists in Gaza. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) condemned the killing of four Palestinian journalists earlier in the month, urging the international community to hold Israel accountable for its actions against the press. Since the onset of the war on October 7, 2023, at least 141 journalists have been killed in Gaza, according to CPJ’s report.
The loss of these journalists highlights the increasing risks faced by media workers in conflict zones, where press freedom and safety are under constant threat. This tragic event serves as a reminder of the dangerous realities journalists face while trying to report the truth amidst ongoing violence.
