South Sudan: At least 49 dead in armed raid targeting herders

A deadly clash linked to cattle theft has resulted in at least 49 deaths and 33 injuries in Warrap State, northern South Sudan. Local authorities are calling for calm as tensions between herding communities remain particularly high.

An attack carried out at dawn

The tragedy occurred on Thursday, August 27, around 5 a.m., in Tonj North County, Warrap State. According to local authorities, armed men attacked a pastoral camp, resulting in at least 49 deaths and 33 injuries.

The assailants are believed to have come from the neighboring Unity State, although authorities from that territory contest the idea that their communities were solely responsible. Unity's Information Minister, Nyakenya Johannes, stated that not all attackers originated from that state.

This nuance reflects the complexity of the community violence that regularly affects the country. In a region where administrative borders do not always align with the movement areas of herders, local rivalries can quickly escalate into inter-community conflicts.

Cattle at the heart of tensions

In South Sudan, clashes between herding communities are often fueled by access to resources. Available grazing land and water points are particularly contested, especially during periods when climatic conditions increase pressure on livelihoods.

Cattle represent both an economic asset, a source of income, and an important social marker for many pastoral communities. Raids aimed at seizing herds can thus trigger cycles of retaliation that are difficult to halt.

The widespread circulation of weapons among civilian populations also exacerbates the danger of these confrontations. A dispute over resources or herds can quickly escalate into a deadly armed operation.

Authorities call for de-escalation

William Wol Mayom Bol, the Information Minister of Warrap State, described the attack as brutal and expressed condolences to the victims' families. He also called for restraint while authorities from both states seek to coordinate their response.

The stated goal is to identify those responsible and promote peaceful coexistence among the affected populations. This is a delicate task in a context where retaliation often follows initial clashes.

For Unity, authorities also assure that they wish to work towards maintaining peaceful relations between the communities of both regions. This willingness to cooperate will be crucial in preventing the Tonj North attack from triggering a new wave of violence.

Persistent community violence

The toll from this attack once again illustrates the fragility of the security situation in South Sudan. Even outside of large-scale political or military confrontations, conflicts related to resources, cattle, and community displacements continue to cause heavy human losses.
