OpenAI plans $1.5 billion investment in enterprise AI joint venture
OpenAI is preparing to invest up to $1.5 billion in a new joint venture with private equity firms, aiming to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence tools across large US companies. The initiative reflects intensifying competition among AI developers to secure enterprise clients and generate stable revenue streams.
The project, internally known as DeployCo, is expected to begin with an initial $500 million contribution from OpenAI, alongside an option to commit an additional $1 billion at a later stage. The joint venture is projected to reach a valuation of around $10 billion as part of a funding round anticipated to close in early May.
Major private equity players are set to play a central role in the structure. Firms including TPG, Bain Capital, and Advent International are expected to contribute roughly $4 billion collectively, with TPG positioned as the lead investor. Brookfield Asset Management has also been involved in broader discussions around the deal.
DeployCo will focus on embedding AI solutions within companies owned by participating private equity funds. The model is designed to generate revenue by improving operational efficiency and accelerating digital transformation across portfolio businesses. In return, investors are expected to gain board representation and early access to OpenAI’s enterprise products.
The move comes amid growing rivalry in the enterprise AI segment. Anthropic is pursuing similar partnerships with firms such as Blackstone and Hellman & Friedman to expand the reach of its Claude AI system. However, OpenAI’s proposed structure includes preferential equity terms, offering downside protection and a minimum return of 17.5 percent, conditions viewed as more attractive than competing offers.
The joint venture highlights a broader strategic shift within OpenAI toward enterprise revenue. The company faces rising costs linked to developing advanced AI systems and is seeking scalable distribution channels. By partnering with private equity firms that collectively control thousands of companies, OpenAI could rapidly expand the deployment of its enterprise platform, including its Frontier offering.
If completed, the deal would rank among the largest direct investments by an AI company in a distribution-focused partnership. It underscores how competition in artificial intelligence is increasingly moving beyond product development toward large-scale commercial integration through financial and corporate networks.
