Morocco advances domestic defense industry with long-range Irifi system
Morocco is taking another step toward expanding its domestic defense industry with the unveiling of the Irifi system, a long-range platform being developed by Harmattan AI in cooperation with the Kingdom. The company says the system has a range of around 2,000 kilometers, placing it among aerial systems designed to operate over extended distances.
The project was highlighted on Wednesday, October 7, during the opening of the 2026 Marrakech International Air Show, where Morocco’s National Defense Administration signed a letter of intent with the Moroccan branch of Harmattan AI. The agreement covers the acquisition, development and production of the Irifi system in Morocco.
The announcement reflects Morocco’s broader efforts to develop national capabilities in advanced defense technologies, particularly in autonomous systems and artificial intelligence. Rather than focusing solely on the acquisition of foreign equipment, the cooperation points toward a model that combines technology development with local industrial production.
The approximately 2,000-kilometer range is one of the most notable characteristics publicly associated with Irifi. However, the stated range should not be interpreted as confirmation that the system has entered operational service. The current agreement is a letter of intent, while details concerning production schedules, delivery dates and the number of systems involved have not been publicly disclosed.
According to its developer, Irifi incorporates technologies intended to increase autonomy during missions. These reportedly include navigation that can operate without continuous reliance on global positioning systems, onboard sensing and data processing, as well as optical guidance during the final stage of a mission. Other technical and operational specifications remain undisclosed.
The industrial dimension of the project is also significant. Producing the system in Morocco could contribute to the development of local expertise in engineering, research and development, manufacturing and advanced defense technologies. Such capabilities can help create a broader ecosystem around military production and technological innovation.
The initiative comes as Morocco continues to expand its defense-industrial base, with increasing attention to unmanned aerial systems, artificial intelligence and autonomous technologies. The country has sought to attract international defense companies and establish partnerships capable of transferring expertise and supporting domestic manufacturing.
The Irifi project also illustrates the growing importance of technological autonomy in modern defense planning. Advanced autonomous platforms increasingly rely on onboard computing, sensors, navigation technologies and artificial intelligence, reducing dependence on continuous external control in certain mission environments.
For Morocco, the development and potential local production of such a system could strengthen its position as an emerging defense manufacturing hub in Africa. At the same time, the limited information currently available means that the system’s final specifications, production scale and operational status remain subject to further clarification.
The Marrakech announcement therefore represents an important development in Morocco’s defense-industrial strategy, while the next stages of the project will determine how quickly the Irifi system moves from development and cooperation toward actual domestic production and deployment.
