Morocco suspends Portuguese poultry imports amid avian flu concerns

Casablanca, Morocco – September 8, 2025: Morocco has temporarily suspended imports of poultry, eggs, and related products from Portugal following the detection of a highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak near Lisbon. The measure aims to protect public health but raises concerns about potential economic impacts.

The ban affects live poultry, meat, processed products, eggs, and animal feed. Only products that have undergone sufficient heat treatment to destroy the virus are allowed, provided they carry an official health certificate.

In a letter to Portuguese authorities, Morocco’s National Office for Food Safety (ONSSA) stressed that the measure is temporary and will depend on the evolution of the epidemiological situation in Portugal.

The decision follows confirmation of an outbreak in a laying hen farm near Lisbon, while the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) also reported cases in Germany and Portugal, resulting in the culling of thousands of birds. Migratory birds, particularly waterfowl, are considered primary vectors, increasing the risk of cross-border transmission.

The suspension could impact the Moroccan market, as Portugal is a key supplier of frozen poultry and hatching eggs, products crucial for stabilizing domestic production. Sector professionals warn of reduced supply and rising prices. Experts emphasize the need for a support plan for local producers and diversification of supply sources to prevent shortages and price spikes.
