Morocco strengthens textile sector through strategic investment with Sunrise Group

In a significant move to bolster the textile industry, Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch presided over the signing of an investment agreement with the Chinese conglomerate Sunrise Group on March 20, 2025, in Rabat. This partnership aims to enhance the competitiveness of Morocco's textile sector and solidify the country's position as a regional leader, in line with the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

According to an official communiqué, this ambitious project entails a total investment of 2.3 billion dirhams, which will see the establishment of two industrial units in Skhirat and Fès. These facilities are expected to create an integrated textile supply chain, generating 7,000 direct jobs and over 1,500 indirect positions, thereby reinforcing Morocco's role in global value chains.

The investment is poised to significantly enhance local sourcing for Moroccan companies in yarn, fabrics, and finished products. It aims to streamline logistics, reduce costs, and enable businesses to fulfill international orders directly, without intermediaries. This development is anticipated to improve the efficiency of the sector and increase the competitiveness of Moroccan enterprises, helping them to explore new market opportunities.

In his address, Prime Minister Akhannouch highlighted that this landmark project underscores the strong bilateral relations between Morocco and China, driven by the strategic visions of King Mohammed VI and President Xi Jinping. The agreement also reflects the growing confidence of foreign investors in Morocco and reaffirms the country’s status as a regional textile powerhouse.

He also noted that this investment agreement with Sunrise Group is expected to create a total of 8,500 jobs, aligning with the government's strategy to prioritize employment promotion.

The signing of this agreement concludes a series of constructive discussions between the two parties, including a notable meeting in Shanghai in September 2024, where Akhannouch met with the president of Sunrise Group, which operates subsidiaries in several Asian countries.

The agreement was signed on the Chinese side by Xu Lei, president of Sunrise Group, and on the Moroccan side by several key ministers, including Abdelouafi Laftit (Interior), Nadia Fettah (Economy and Finance), and Nizar Baraka (Equipment and Water). The event was also attended by Ali Seddiki, Director General of the Moroccan Agency for Investment and Export Development.
