Ceuta authorities report 15 rape cases amid heightened security after mass migrant arrivals
Spanish authorities in Ceuta have reportedly registered 15 rape cases since the mass arrival of migrants in the Spanish enclave at the end of July, according to Spanish media reports.
The cases were reported in different parts of the city, with the latest incident allegedly occurring on Friday evening on Lisbon Street. Spanish media reported that three people, believed to be brothers, were suspected of attempting to assault a 10-year-old girl.
The reports come as security measures have been strengthened across Ceuta following the recent increase in migrant arrivals. According to sources cited by Spanish media, around 1,800 minors have so far been identified by authorities and provided with identification bracelets. Some of them have reportedly returned to the streets after being registered.
Around 1,500 police and Civil Guard officers are taking part in security operations across the city. Authorities have also increased protection around commercial areas as businesses gradually resume normal activity.
At the same time, the migrant situation remains a major challenge for local authorities. Spanish media reported that approximately 1,500 people voluntarily returned to Morocco during the previous week, while thousands of others remained in different parts of the city, including schools in the El Príncipe district and buildings close to the border.
The reported criminal cases have added to concerns surrounding public safety and the management of the migrant population. However, individual allegations and investigations should be distinguished from the broader migrant population, and the circumstances of each reported case remain subject to the relevant legal proceedings.
The situation continues to place pressure on Spanish authorities as they seek to strengthen security, manage vulnerable minors and address the consequences of the recent migration surge in Ceuta.
