Morocco strengthens role in global forest governance talks
New York hosted the 21st session of the United Nations Forum on Forests from 11 to 15 May 2026. Morocco played a visible role in the proceedings through the participation of the Director General of the National Agency for Water and Forests. He acted as Vice President of the Forum Bureau and facilitated multiple negotiation sessions involving member states and international partners.
The discussions unfolded against a backdrop of accelerating climate pressure, land degradation, and biodiversity loss. Delegations focused on the need to strengthen coordination on forest protection policies and to improve implementation of global commitments. A key outcome was a resolution centered on three priorities: faster execution of the United Nations strategic plan for forests, progress toward global forest goals for 2030, and stronger cooperation on financing and technology transfer.
The resolution also recognized initiatives linked to Morocco in areas such as community-based forest management, technological innovation, and sustainable financing models for the forestry sector. Negotiators emphasized the importance of aligning national strategies with global environmental targets to improve resilience and limit further ecological degradation.
Morocco’s involvement builds on its election in 2024 to the Bureau of the Forum for the African region for the 2024 to 2026 term. That position reinforced its role in shaping discussions within United Nations environmental governance structures and reflected growing confidence from African states and international partners in its approach to sustainable forest management.
