Morocco sets sights on hosting 2029 FIFA Club World Cup

Morocco continues to cement its position as a global football hub, expressing formal interest in hosting the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup. Known for its world-class sports infrastructure and growing reputation as a reliable host, the North African nation is taking significant steps to secure the prestigious tournament.

A serious bid for 2029

According to Spanish sports outlet Marca, Morocco has officially entered the race to host the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup. The report highlights Morocco’s “serious intent” as the country begins exploring bid requirements.

The potential bid for the 2029 tournament is independent of Morocco’s partnership with Spain and Portugal to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Morocco’s standalone interest reflects its growing ambition to solidify its role as a leading football destination.

In addition to Morocco, football giants like Spain and Brazil are also vying to host the 2029 competition. Marca described the increasing interest in hosting the Club World Cup as indicative of its elevated status, with clubs and federations viewing it as a high-value event.

Proven hosting capabilities

Morocco has an impressive track record in hosting international football tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the FIFA Club World Cup, among others. This year, Morocco is set to host AFCON and will also co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The country’s sports infrastructure has won widespread praise from FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF). FIFA Tournament Sub-division Director Jaime Yarza recently lauded Morocco’s facilities, calling them “exceptional” and comparable to those in top-tier European countries.

“The infrastructure is modern and professional. Morocco now has nothing to envy from major European nations,” Yarza said.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Morocco’s rapid development in football. During a recent visit to several stadiums, CAF representatives were reportedly impressed by the quality of Morocco’s high-level sports venues.

A growing football powerhouse

Morocco’s rise as a football powerhouse is attributed to the combined efforts of the government and the Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF). Their investments in sports infrastructure and grassroots development have positioned the country as a major player in African and global football.

Motsepe praised Morocco’s achievements, stating, “Morocco’s progress in football reflects relentless effort and vision. The country’s contributions to the sport extend beyond Africa, enhancing its global reputation.”

By targeting the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup, Morocco is not only showcasing its ability to host world-class events but also reinforcing its commitment to the development of football as a key pillar of national pride and international influence.
