Morocco's Strategic Presence at AU Executive Council Meeting in Accra
Accra, Ghana – The African Union (AU) Executive Council commenced its 45th ordinary session in Accra, Ghana, with Morocco asserting a significant presence in the ongoing deliberations.
Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita leads a distinguished delegation in this crucial two-day meeting, which brings together foreign ministers from AU member states to address an array of pivotal issues.
Foremost on the agenda is the review of the 48th ordinary session of the Permanent Representatives’ Committee (PRC) and an activity report centered on the AU's 2024 theme: “Educating an Africa fit for the 21st Century: Building resilient educational systems for increased access to inclusive, quality, lifelong learning relevant to Africa.”
The Executive Council is also set to examine the AU’s strategic engagements with the G20 and other global partnerships, coupled with the adoption of the AU’s budget for 2025. Morocco aims to leverage this platform to bolster its candidacies for influential roles within the AU framework.
A significant focus will be the AU’s role in the upcoming G20 summit in Brazil this November. Discussions will center on positioning the continent’s interests effectively during this major international event.
Beyond institutional matters, the council is poised to tackle pressing security challenges threatening the continent's stability. These include the surge of militant activities in West Africa and the Sahel, ongoing conflicts in Somalia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and the broader repercussions of these crises on regional stability.
Climate change remains a critical topic, with discussions highlighting its impact on food security. The continent faces severe risks, with millions at the brink of famine and malnutrition due to climate variability.
The Moroccan delegation features notable figures such as Ambassador Mohamed Arrouchi, Morocco's permanent representative to the AU and the UN Economic Commission for Africa; Ambassador Mohamed Methqal, director-general of the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation; Ambassador Imane Ouaadil to Ghana; and Hassane Boukili, director of Greater Maghreb, UMA Affairs, and AU at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
