Morocco’s Post-Earthquake Reconstruction Is on ‘Excellent’ Track

Following the catastrophic 6.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the southern region of Al-Haouz on September 8, 2023, claiming nearly 3,000 lives, the rehabilitation process for damaged and collapsed homes in the hard-hit Talat N'Yaaqoub commune is progressing with remarkable efficiency, as reported by Morocco's state news agency (MAP).

The rural community, among the hardest hit by the natural disaster, has transformed into a bustling construction site. Here, the meticulous removal of rubble and debris, site preparation, foundation laying, and rebuilding and renovation efforts are underway under the vigilant oversight of local authorities and relevant stakeholders.

MAP's report illustrates unwavering commitment and tireless efforts, with each project advancing steadily, restoring hope and stability to the region's residents. A recent field visit to Isqalen douar, a remote area greatly affected by the earthquake, revealed the profound mobilization of local government and their resolute determination to support affected communities.

Months after the tragic tremor, the local authorities' presence on the ground remains steadfast, extending beyond immediate financial aid. They have actively assisted, monitored, and guided victims through the process of obtaining building permits and architectural designs, ensuring a seamless transition towards reconstruction.

Hassan Ait Ouhman, the son of a beneficiary from Isqalen douar, expressed gratitude for the significant support received in the reconstruction operation, highlighting the remarkable progress of the construction work. He acknowledged the invaluable assistance provided by local authorities and technical committees, which has alleviated the burden on victims and families.

Similarly, Said Ait Lhoussain, another beneficiary from Tamaroute douar, voiced his satisfaction with the progression of reconstruction efforts, underscoring the continuous monitoring and support from regional authorities and various stakeholders.

In response to the devastating earthquake, the Moroccan government, following high royal directives, swiftly mobilized resources, providing direct financial assistance of MAD 140,000 ($14,000) for the reconstruction of completely collapsed houses and MAD 80,000 ($8,000) for the repair of partially collapsed structures.

As the region steadily rebuilds from the ruins, the resilience and determination of its people, bolstered by the unwavering support of local and regional authorities, serve as a testament to the indomitable spirit of Al-Haouz. The journey towards recovery may be long, but the community's resolve to rise from the ashes remains unshaken, paving the way for a brighter, more resilient future.
