Morocco's national strike draws massive workforce participation
A nationwide strike in Morocco has garnered substantial support across multiple sectors, with trade unions reporting participation rates surpassing 80% during the two-day action on Wednesday and Thursday. The strike emerged as a response to governmental policies regarding strike legislation.
The education sector showed particularly strong engagement, with the Moroccan Labor Union documenting participation rates between 80% and 90%. Healthcare facilities throughout various regions demonstrated similar solidarity, maintaining participation levels above 80%. Across both public and private sectors, the overall participation rate reached 84%.
Private sector involvement proved especially robust, with the Democratic Confederation of Labor noting participation exceeding 90% in several industries. The mining sector achieved complete participation with a 100% turnout rate.
In higher education institutions, the National Union of Labor in Morocco, which maintains ties to the opposition Justice and Development Party, reported participation levels ranging from 50% to 60%.
Additional sectors showing significant involvement included labor inspection services at 70% participation and agricultural operations, particularly in real estate preservation, exceeding 90%, according to the Democratic Orientation Union.
