Morocco's Aviation Sector Witnesses a Remarkable Rebound
Morocco's aviation sector is reaching new heights with a remarkable rebound, as indicated by data released by the National Airports Office (ONDA), showcasing a surge in passenger traffic by an impressive 17% in the first two months of 2024 compared to the same period last year.
February 2024 proved to be exceptional, witnessing a staggering 19% increase in passenger numbers year-over-year, reaching an astonishing 2.27 million. This surge was predominantly driven by the flourishing international travel market, which accounted for an astounding 91% of total traffic.
European destinations led the surge with a 20% increase in passenger traffic, closely followed by notable gains from the Middle East, Far East, Africa, North America, and the Maghreb region, highlighting the diverse appeal of Morocco's aviation sector.
While international travel took the forefront, domestic travel also saw a healthy 8% increase in February compared to the same month in 2023, marking significant progress towards pre-pandemic levels, with domestic traffic trailing only 3% behind the figures recorded in February 2019.
Beyond commercial airfare, general aircraft movements also soared, experiencing a 12% increase in February 2024 compared to the previous year. Mohammed V Airport led this surge, handling an impressive 36% of all departures and arrivals, closely followed by Marrakech Menara and Agadir Al Massira.
The upward trend extended to cargo traffic as well, witnessing a remarkable 35% boost in February 2024 compared to the same month in 2023, underscoring the thriving air freight market in Morocco and further solidifying the nation's aviation sector.
Reflecting on 2022, it marked a pivotal year for Moroccan airports, achieving impressive recovery rates with passenger traffic reaching 82% of 2019 levels and aircraft movements recovering to a robust 83%. Remarkably, December 2023 even surpassed pre-pandemic figures, with passenger and aircraft movement recovery rates soaring to 104% and 94%, respectively.
These statistics vividly portray a strong and resilient recovery for Morocco's aviation sector, gradually gaining momentum from the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The figures for 2024 stand as a testament to the industry's unwavering determination and Morocco's allure as a global travel destination.
