Morocco leads Africa and Arab world in intellectual property protection
Morocco has reaffirmed its position as the foremost country in Africa and the Arab world for intellectual property (IP) protection and innovation, ranking 22nd globally in the 2025 International IP Index with a score of 59.21. This represents a slight decline from its 2024 score of 62.76 out of 100.
The US Chamber of Commerce credits this achievement to Morocco's strategic efforts in enhancing its legal and institutional IP framework. The country has joined several pivotal international agreements, including the Singapore Treaty on Trademarks and the Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement, which are designed to safeguard industrial designs.
The Moroccan Office of Industrial and Commercial Property (OMPIC) has acknowledged this success, highlighting various initiatives that promote innovation. Among these is the Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH), which accelerates patent processing through international collaboration. Additional programs, such as the National Bank of Innovative Projects and the IP Marketplace, aim to support inventors and facilitate the commercialization of new ideas.
“International recognition reflects the positive momentum Morocco is experiencing in industrial property, with steady growth in applications for trademarks, patents, and industrial designs,” stated OMPIC.
Despite these advancements, the US authority noted ongoing challenges, particularly in addressing counterfeit goods and digital piracy, alongside concerns regarding the clarity and enforcement of IP rights in software-related inventions.
Morocco’s elevated ranking underscores its dedication to fostering innovation, enhancing legal protections, and attracting investment through a robust intellectual property system.
