Morocco initiative tackles food waste through digital redistribution platform
Food waste has become a structural challenge in Morocco with social and environmental effects. Data from the Economic, Social and Environmental Council indicate that more than four million tons of food are discarded each year. This represents around 113 kilograms per person annually and reflects a persistent imbalance between surplus and need across the country.
A digital initiative called Colibghiti, created in 2020, works to reduce this gap by connecting businesses with excess food to charitable associations. The platform allows supermarkets, restaurants, hotels, and agro-food companies to list unsold but safe products. These goods are then collected and redistributed to partner organizations working with vulnerable groups.
Representatives of the initiative state that the system transforms potential waste into usable resources through coordinated logistics and compliance with food safety standards. The model also targets environmental impact by reducing emissions linked to food disposal. It encourages participating companies to adopt structured practices for managing surplus food. The network currently includes four companies supplying products and more than 50 associations operating in Casablanca, Rabat, Salé, and Témara.
Social organizations report direct benefits from this system. A representative of the Idmaj Foundation for Development said the initiative supports programs serving children, youth, and women in vulnerable situations through four integration centers. More than 500 families receive regular food assistance through redistributed meals and products, reinforcing local support structures for at-risk households.
