Egypt: TV Presenter Sentenced to Death in Major Drug Trafficking Case

Sarah Khalifa, a well-known face on Egyptian television, has been sentenced to death along with eleven other defendants in a significant case related to the production and trafficking of narcotics. The verdict, delivered by a Cairo court, may still be subject to appeal.

A Television Personality at the Center of a Criminal Case

Sarah Khalifa's name extends far beyond the judicial framework in Egypt. At 39 years old, the presenter gained recognition through “Mission Impossible”, a show dedicated to security and crime issues.

Her conviction comes in a procedure targeting a group accused by the Egyptian judiciary of organizing criminal activity around the production and trafficking of narcotics.

According to official media, the Cairo court also charged the defendants with possession and transport of firearms and ammunition without authorization.

Twelve Death Sentences

In total, twelve individuals have been sentenced to death, including Sarah Khalifa. The judiciary accuses them of forming a criminal organization aimed at procuring substances and materials used in the production of narcotics for commercial purposes.

The nature of the sentence pronounced adds a particular dimension to this case, as death sentences are subject to a specific judicial process in Egypt.

Before delivering its verdict, the court notably sought the opinion of the Grand Mufti of Egypt, in accordance with the procedure stipulated by the country's legislation in cases that may lead to a capital sentence.

Despite the severity of the decision, the judicial file is not closed. The verdict can indeed be challenged on appeal, opening a new phase in the procedure.
