Yemen: Fighting Between Houthis and Government Forces Claims Over 140 Lives
The war in Yemen is experiencing a new surge of violence. More than 140 people have been killed in less than 24 hours in clashes between government-backed forces and Houthi rebels in the southwest of the country.
This new escalation adds to the human toll of the Yemeni conflict. According to several military sources cited by AFP, the fighting that took place between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning resulted in over 140 deaths on both sides.
The clashes have concentrated in the southwest of Yemen, where internationally recognized government forces are facing off against Houthi fighters, a movement allied with Iran.
Government Forces Report 84 Deaths
The toll communicated by two military officials from the Saudi-backed forces indicates 84 soldiers killed during this latest sequence of fighting.
According to these officials, a significant portion of the casualties was caused by rocket attacks. The intensity of the clashes reflects the persistence of Houthi military capabilities, despite years of conflict and various attempts to establish a lasting truce.
Against government forces, the rebels continue to control a significant portion of Yemeni territory, including the capital Sanaa and several regions in the north and west of the country.
57 Houthi Fighters Killed
On the Houthi side, 57 rebels are reported to have been killed during the same period, according to four sources from the Houthi camp.
These figures, communicated separately by both sides, remain difficult to verify independently in an area where access to combat zones is particularly restricted. However, they provide an indication of the scale of the clashes that pitted the belligerents against each other for several hours.
This new wave of violence comes as the Yemeni conflict remains marked by a series of local confrontations, despite diplomatic efforts in recent years to reduce hostilities.
A War Far from Over
The conflict in Yemen has pitted the Houthis against government forces for over a decade. The military intervention of a coalition led by Saudi Arabia has deeply internationalized the war, while Iran is regularly accused of supporting the Houthi rebels.
Recent clashes serve as a reminder that the relative calm observed on some fronts has not ended military tensions. Episodes of violence continue to occur, posing a renewed threat to civilian populations and complicating the prospects for a political resolution.
The heavy toll recorded in less than a day also illustrates the fragility of the security situation in the country. While regional and international actors continue to seek a political solution to the conflict, the forces on the ground remain capable of quickly reigniting hostilities.
A New Warning Signal
This resumption of fighting comes after other deadly clashes reported in recent days between government forces and the Houthis. It could thus represent a new point of tension in a war whose humanitarian consequences remain considerable.
For the Yemeni population, each resumption of fighting raises fears of new casualties, additional displacements, and a worsening of an already extremely precarious situation.
