Lebanon: Four Dead in New Israeli Strikes, Ceasefire with Hezbollah Under Strain
The ceasefire established between Israel and Hezbollah in June once again shows its limits. Four people, including two women, were killed on Sunday in multiple Israeli strikes targeting southern Lebanon. About twenty others were also injured, as the Israeli army claims to have responded to an attack carried out by the Shiite movement.
Four Dead in Southern Lebanon
Southern Lebanon was once again hit by Israeli airstrikes on Sunday, resulting in four deaths and around twenty injuries, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health.
Two people were killed in Nabatiyeh el-Faouqa, while two women lost their lives in Arab Salim. Several women are also among the injured, as well as three children.
These new strikes come as the cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, which took effect after an agreement reached in June, was supposed to sustainably reduce violence in this part of the country.
Israel Claims Response to Hezbollah
The Israeli army states that its strikes are a response to an attack carried out by Hezbollah. According to them, two drones were launched against Israeli soldiers present in southern Lebanon.
The army specified that this attack did not result in any injuries among its soldiers, while calling it a blatant violation of the ceasefire.
This version places both camps in a cycle of retaliation, despite the existence of the agreement intended to prevent a resumption of large-scale clashes.
A Fragile Ceasefire
Since its implementation, the ceasefire has remained under significant tension. Exchanges of fire and sporadic military operations continue to raise concerns about its ability to hold over time.
The latest strikes illustrate this fragility. Each new attack raises fears of a spiral that could transform localized violence into a larger confrontation.
In the affected areas, the consequences are also severe for civilians. The presence of women and children among the injured serves as a reminder that residents of southern Lebanon remain directly exposed to the repercussions of this confrontation.
The Risk of Further Escalation
The situation remains particularly delicate as Lebanese authorities attempt to maintain calm, and the region continues to be marked by tensions related to the war in the Middle East.
The sequence of an attack attributed to Hezbollah and the subsequent Israeli strikes shows how quickly the ceasefire can be called into question.
With four new victims and several dozen injured, southern Lebanon is experiencing yet another episode of violence that could further complicate efforts to maintain the ceasefire.
