Morocco-Spain Joint Operation Thwarts Massive Drug Smuggling Attempt off Gran Canaria

In a remarkable display of international cooperation, Moroccan and Spanish authorities have successfully thwarted a large-scale drug smuggling attempt off the coast of Gran Canaria, seizing 2,345 kilograms of hashish destined for illegal markets.

The joint operation, which took place near the Spanish island, was prompted by intelligence provided by Morocco's General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST). Acting swiftly on this information, Spanish law enforcement agencies, including the Judicial Police Unit and the Provincial Maritime Service of the Civil Guard in Las Palmas, mobilized to intercept the suspected traffickers.

Using a coordinated strategy that involved both maritime and land-based units, authorities identified and intercepted a suspicious rubber dinghy sailing without lights near the coast. Upon closer inspection, the vessel was found to be carrying 66 bales of hashish, weighing over 2,300 kilograms.

The seizure was a major success in the ongoing fight against transnational drug trafficking, disrupting a criminal enterprise and leading to the arrest of two suspects believed to be the pilots of the dinghy. The suspects, both in their late twenties and thirties, now face charges related to crimes against public health and are in provisional detention awaiting further legal proceedings.

Along with the substantial drug haul, authorities confiscated critical equipment used in the smuggling operation, including the rubber dinghy, outboard motors, a satellite phone, and GPS devices. This effectively disrupted the traffickers' ability to continue their illicit activities.

The organized crime and narcotics unit of Las Palmas has taken charge of the investigation, with the detainees and seized evidence handed over to the investigating court number one for prosecution. This operation is a testament to the unwavering commitment of Moroccan and Spanish authorities to combat drug trafficking and ensure the safety and security of their citizens.

As the international community continues to grapple with the challenges posed by organized crime and drug smuggling, successful joint operations like this one highlight the importance of cross-border cooperation and information sharing in dismantling these networks.
